Technical support for Lucid Stand alone software
On this page you will find answers to the most
frequently asked technical questions.
If your query is not answered below please contact us for free technical support.
When contacting us please have the following information available:
Software version number, serial number, details of any error message the
program has given.
For information about software licences and how they work please see Software licence
We also recommend that you visit our upgrades page from time to time to

What operating systems do Lucid products run on?
Lucid's most recent (Version 5 series) stand-alone software has been
designed to work on platforms running Windows ® 2000 and XP which allow
writing to folders coming from the Program Files folder. The technical
team is currently working towards implementing full Microsoft 'Designed
for Microsoft Windows XP' compliance for all it's software systems,
including moving the databases away from Program Files and into All
Users Application Data.
Lucid also tries to support ME and Win98 Second Edition - only rarely
have we found computers using these OS having problems running Lucid
software. If Lucid's software doesn't run properly (e.g. animations run
too slowly) it is because the computer is old, has inadequate System RAM
or has an old, slow graphics card. Please contact our technical support
about any specific queries you have on this.
Why won't the Lucid serial number work after installation on a new computer?
Lucid's serial numbers normally employ a special format which only
allows them to be used within a particular time scale. This means that
if you wish to install the software onto a different computer the serial
number may not be accepted. If you experience this issue it can be
rectified by transferring the licence information from the original
computer it was installed on (the fact sheet below gives instruction on
how to do this). If you are unable to transfer from one PC to another
the serial number issue can be overcome so please contact us for
information on how to do this.
In the later editions of the software such as Version 5, it may be
permitted to install during the calendar year following the issue of the
serial number if the licence period is 3 or 5 years and if the user
provides the invoice month and year when the registration screen asks
for it.

to transfer databases between computers (Version 5)PDF
How can I transfer my results from one computer to another?
This is quite straightforward. Because your school or organisation's
licence details are held within a database file, by transferring this
file to the second computer your licence details including serial number
will be transferred too. Please see the fact sheets below for detailed
instructions.

The program is asking for the CD to be inserted into the drive but it is already in there.
Sometimes the act of using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control
Panel to uninstall or repair the Lucid software can result in corruption
of the 'INI' file which tells the software where to find the CD. If this
is the case, the software will complain that it can't find the CD in the
CD Rom drive. A downloadable utility program which can fix the INI file
is available. click here to go to the utilities
pageIf your software is not listed on this utility please contact us
for assistance.
Run time error '1406 error writing to key' is appearing when I try to re-install some software.
This error is caused by your computers version of Adobe Macromedia Flash
being more recent than the one on the CD. To overcome the error, simply
press ‘I’ to ignore several times (approx 25 in total) and the program
will continue to install as normal. Once the software is installed the
error will not appear again and the program will run as normal.
I am experiencing File Permissions issues.
Lucid stand-alone software systems currently use Microsoft Access 2000
databases to store pupil information and their results. Both the
administration and assessment modules need to have Write Permissions to
the databases themselves and the folders which house these files. These
folders are usually:
C:Program FilesLucidResearchLucid Applicationsystem and
C:Program FilesLucidResearchLucid Applicationarchives
Where ‘Lucid Application’ represents the title of the software product
which will become obvious when browsing using 'My Computer'.
By giving Read/Write/Modify Permissions to both these folders AND their
contents, all Users should be able to have their data saved happily to
the central database.
Note: The latest versions of Lucid software have modifications built
into the Installer (setup) program which automatically assign full
access permissions to the appropriate folders.
To comply fully with Windows XP protocols we will soon be moving the
location of databases to 'All UsersApplication Data' and upgrading all
software systems accordingly.
I have entered a pupil's name etc but the program does not appear to have saved it.
Problems sometimes occur when the software is installed on a networked computer or if the software is being run on a User Account with insufficient write permissions to certain folders on the hard drive. Please contact us for assistance.
Additional information is available in The Software Guide which
describes how to use and administer the software's databases and users,
as well as describing the features of the Reports engine. All software
systems have a Software Guide in both html and PDF formats accessible
from the software and also as a PDF file on the CD itself.
